Your Questions About Tours & Treks

The Sahara doesn’t have street signs or fixed paths — the dunes shift with the wind, so there isn’t a single fixed map the way there is for a city. That’s exactly why every trip travels with an experienced local guide who knows the terrain, the wells and the safe routes between M’Hamid, Erg Chegaga, Erg Zahar and Erg Lihoudi. If you’d like a general overview of the area before you travel, just ask us and we’ll send you a route overview by WhatsApp or email.
M’Hamid El Ghizlane is the last town before the open Sahara, about 100km south of Zagora at the end of the paved road. It’s the gateway to the great dune seas (ergs) of Chegaga, Zahar and Lihoudi, and it’s where our family has lived and guided travellers for generations. Almost all of our tours and camel treks start and end here.
The best time to visit is from September to May, when daytime temperatures are comfortable and nights are cool enough to sleep well under the stars. We recommend avoiding June to August, when midday heat in the Sahara regularly exceeds 40°C (104°F). December and January nights can get cold, so warm layers are essential even though the days stay pleasant.
Pack light, breathable clothing for daytime and warm layers for the night (a fleece or jacket, even in summer), comfortable closed shoes or light trekking boots, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen. A headlamp or torch is handy around camp, along with a reusable water bottle. We provide the tents, bedding, camels or 4×4 transport, and all meals, so you don’t need to bring any camping gear.
No experience is needed. Our camel treks and 4×4 excursions are suitable for beginners, families and children — our guides set the pace to the group and give you all the instruction you need before setting off.
All of our tours and treks are available from 2 people upwards, and we also welcome solo travellers — ask us about joining a small group. For larger groups, family trips, or fully private tailor-made itineraries, just contact us with your dates and number of travellers.
It’s about 6-7 hours by road from Marrakech to M’Hamid El Ghizlane (via Ouarzazate and Zagora), or around 4 hours to Ouarzazate alone. If you’re joining one of our tours departing from Marrakech, transport is included and we take care of the whole journey for you.
